There is no US federal law banning lead wheel weights. Instead, the EPA has run a voluntary phase-out programme since the late 2000s, working with tyre equipment makers, retailers and vehicle manufacturers. Under that programme, most major tyre chains, OEM fit-lines and national retailers committed to switching to lead-free weights, which is why lead weights have become hard to source through major US distribution even in states where they remain legal.

Europe, Japan and other markets
The EU has no blanket ban on lead wheel weights as of 2026, but two forces have largely taken lead out of the European market anyway: the End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) Directive restricts lead content in new vehicles, and OEM-approved fitment lists now specify lead-free weights almost without exception. Japan's auto industry phased out lead weights through voluntary agreement over the 2000s, and South Korea followed a similar path. In practice, any distributor supplying OEM or OEM-adjacent channels in these regions already needs lead-free stock regardless of the law.
